The Executioner Page 4
He would protect the public from the most terrible menaces imaginable.
“My name’s James Olmos,” he said, extending his hand to the man who was to be his mentor.
His counterpart extended his hand and shook it firmly. “Marvin Dicks. I hear you’re a military man, son.”
“Yes sir.”
“Then I assume you can follow directions.”
“Yes sir.”
“Good. The most important thing to remember about Desolation Hill is that on Desolation Hill, if a prisoner steps out of line, he don’t go to the cooler. And dead men never get the chance to meet their makers. And nosy Corrections Officers who ask too many questions don’t live to tell the tale.”
“Understood,” Olmos replied curtly.
“Good, if you can follow that last part, you’ll do just fine here, son. If you can’t you’ll end up like the fellow you’re replacing.”
Olmos thought to ask what that meant, but his military training told him it was better to keep his mouth shut.
Dicks looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to ask the question he knew was on the young man’s mind. When he didn’t, Dicks clapped him on the shoulder.
“I think you’re going to do just fine here, son. Just fine, indeed.”
The End.
